China’s population policy also upsets me. I have heard some more horrific stories about it. Maintaining a low birth rate is one of the most important criteria to evaluate the administration and management ability of a local government official leader. Outstanding achievement on this often means quicker promotion, especially in some counties where overpopulation is a big problem. So pregnant women who are going to deliver “extra” babies have to hide themselves from the official’s eyes until their babies are born and therefore there is no way for the officials to force those women to do abortion. But still, the actual birth rate is not decreased in this way.

Then, the officials figure out a way. They arrest the old and vulnerable grandmothers of the future babies and torture them until the pregnant women come back and “voluntarily” accept the abortion.

There are just so so many problems in every aspect of life in modern China now, which saddens me in every second. Even though I try to convince myself with the notion that change comes little by little, what I always see is not progress but setbacks. Anyway, I think I have the following opinions about China’s one-child policy.

1. Having a baby is a basic human right, like speaking and migrating freely. No one has the power to deprive a person of such a right regardless of the situations or excesses.

2. Overpopulation is a political mistake made by the previous leader of the Party. Those who should take responsibility for the mistake, if any, should be the Party itself, not ordinary citizens.

3. Large population is not the reason which causes numerous troubles in China. Lack of freedom and democracy is!

4. Even if every Chinese is supposed to make some personal sacrifice for the better future of the country, why could celebrities, officials and other people in power have as many children as they want? I do think the injustice is the major reason which irritates people and causes them to disobey the rule.
